Causes of Acne

Acne is caused due to hormonal changes in the body that normally occur during adolescence. The onset of sexual maturity causes increased amounts of hormones called androgen hormones. These hormones overstimulate and the oil glands. The oily substance, called sebum, produced by the sebaceous glands (oil glands) is secreted to the surface of the skin through small pores in the skin. Excess sebum causes the skin pores to get clogged.

The blockage of the skin pores allow bacteria to multiply which results in bacterial infections that result in pimples and creation of pus, causing acne.

Hormonal changes are more pronounced during adolescence. However, during adult age, hormones imbalances can also occur due to stress, menstrual periods and use of some drugs. All these factors can cause acne.

  • Toxic build up in the skin due to the consumption of junk foods can cause acne.
  • Avoid caffiene, fatty and oily foods and all junk foods. Eat a simple diet that includes a lot of green and orange vegetables - preferably cooked only very lightly.

  • Excess yeast growth that may be due to other medications, poor diet or other conditions. Check with a doctor to figure out the cause for excess growth of yeast in the body. Sometimes, antibiotics kill the bacteria that contain the growth of yeast in the body. Eating low fat yogurt helps to restore the lost bacteria that can help controling the growth of yeast in the body.

  • Food allergies may also cause acne. You need to figure out which foods you are allergic to and you should avoid those foods completely.
  •

  • Excess blood sugar levels. Sugar produces more oil in the body and provides food for the bacteria and yeast. Try avoiding sugar in all foods. Artificial sweetners are not recommended as a replacement for sugar.
